Service Overview

More Than Moving Cones. It's a Science.

A properly configured work zone is one of the most critical factors in keeping your workers — and the public — safe. Every sign placement distance, every taper length, and every buffer zone dimension is dictated by MUTCD and PennDOT standards. Get it wrong and your crew is exposed. Get it right and everyone goes home safe.

JML arrives with a full complement of equipment and a trained crew that knows the standards cold. We set up your work zone correctly the first time and don't leave until teardown is complete and the site is restored.

MUTCD & PennDOT Compliant

Every zone, every time — no exceptions

1

Advance Warning Area

The first thing drivers encounter. This section alerts them that conditions ahead are changing and gives them time to slow down and merge safely.

  • Road Work Ahead and advisory speed signs deployed at required upstream distances
  • Sign spacing calculated from posted speed limit per MUTCD Table 6C-4
  • Portable signs on stands placed on correct side of roadway
  • Flagger ahead and one-lane road signs added where flaggers are used

MUTCD 6C — Advance Warning

3

Activity Area & Buffer Space

The heart of the work zone — where your crew operates. The buffer provides a critical safety cushion between live traffic and workers.

  • Longitudinal and lateral buffer space set per MUTCD minimums
  • Work space clearly delineated with cones, drums, or barricades
  • Shadow vehicle or truck-mounted attenuator placed at buffer end if required
  • Flaggers stationed at correct positions with full sight lines to traffic

MUTCD 6C — Activity Area

Four Phases. Zero Shortcuts.

A compliant work zone isn't put together all at once — it's built in a precise sequence. Here's how JML executes every setup from start to finish.

The Setup Process

2

Transition Zone & Taper

The taper guides vehicles from their normal path into the restricted lane or path. This is the most geometry-critical part of the setup.

  • Merge taper length calculated using the L = WS formula per MUTCD
  • Traffic cones or barrels placed at required spacing intervals along taper
  • Arrow board positioned at the upstream end of the taper
  • Channelizing device spacing decreases as vehicles approach the work area

MUTCD 6C — Transition Zone

4

Termination Area & Teardown

Returning traffic to normal conditions — and leaving the site exactly as we found it. Clean, fast, and professional from the last cone to the last sign.

  • End Road Work sign placed at the downstream end of the work zone
  • Tangent taper guides vehicles back to normal lane alignment
  • All signs, cones, barrels, and equipment collected and loaded
  • Roadway surface checked for leftover debris before crew departs

MUTCD 6C — Termination

🔶

Traffic Cones

28\" and 36\" MUTCD-compliant traffic cones with retro-reflective collars for daytime and nighttime visibility. Deployed in OSHA-required quantities for taper and buffer zones.

➡️

Arrow Boards

Trailer-mounted and vehicle-mounted arrow boards with sequential and flashing modes. Positioned at transition zone entry points for maximum advance driver warning.

Everything Arrives With Our Crew

You don't need to source a single piece of traffic control hardware. JML brings a fully stocked setup for every job — the right equipment, in the right quantities, every time.

🚧

Barricades

Type I, II, and III barricades for partial and full road closures, pedestrian channelization, and multi-day work zone perimeters. Reflective sheeting on all panels.

💡

Warning Lights & Delineators

Type A low-intensity and Type C high-intensity warning lights for nighttime and low-visibility work zones. Tubular delineators for edge-line and channelization reinforcement.
